Plain-English guide

Google AI Overviews, explained.

Google AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear above the normal search results, answering the question directly and often naming specific businesses. For a customer they are the first thing on the page; for a business they are a new front door that classic rank tracking does not measure.

What decides who gets named

Overviews are assembled from pages Google's systems consider relevant, current and trustworthy for that query, and the businesses named are the ones those pages corroborate. In our measurement, the pattern is consistent with the other engines: machine-readable pages get retrieved, corroborated businesses get named, and recency matters. It is also distinct from classic ranking: we have measured pages that rank on page one yet never appear in the Overview, and vice versa. Google's own guidance says there is no special markup for AI Overviews; the usual Search indexing, controls and content guidance still apply (Google Search Central: AI features and your website).

The measurement catch

Google announced dedicated AI-visibility reports for Search Console in June 2026, rolling out gradually (UK properties first) and showing impressions only. Even with them, a business can gain or lose this surface without understanding why: impressions say you appeared, not what the answer said about you. The only way to know is to measure the answers directly, repeatedly, because answers change between runs. That is what our baseline does across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity together, engines disagree with each other on three in ten questions, so one engine is never the whole picture.

Common questions

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google shows above the normal results for many searches. They answer the question directly, cite a handful of sources, and for buying questions they often name specific businesses, which makes them a new front door your customers may use before ever seeing your listing.

How does a business appear in AI Overviews?

Google builds Overviews from pages in its index it considers relevant and trustworthy for the query. Appearing is not a submission process: it follows from being retrievable (indexed, machine-readable, fresh) and corroborated (cited and reviewed in sources Google trusts). Presence in the Overview does not require ranking first in the classic results.

Do AI Overviews show up in Search Console?

Increasingly, yes. Google began rolling out dedicated generative-AI performance reports in Search Console in mid-2026; before that, Overview impressions were folded invisibly into overall search totals, and many sites are still waiting for the report. Either way the report shows traffic, not answers: measuring whether Overviews actually name you still takes direct measurement of the answers themselves, which is what an AEO baseline is.
