The honest version

Is AEO worth it?

AEO is worth it if customers research your category before buying and you treat it as cheap early positioning with measured proof, and it is not worth it if you expect a flood of customers this quarter. That is the whole answer; here is the reasoning, drawbacks first, because everyone else leads with the benefits.

The drawbacks, stated plainly

  • The channel is still small. AI assistants refer far less traffic than Google search does today. Growing, but small.
  • It is slow to prove. Page changes need weeks to reach answers; authority takes months. Seasonal trades wait for the season.
  • The ground moves. Engines change behaviour continuously, our volatility data shows identical questions changing verdicts 19% of the time, so measurement has to be repeated to mean anything.
  • The market is hype-heavy. Much of what is sold as AEO is SEO with the sticker changed, or a dashboard with the work left to you.

The benefits, honestly weighed

  • One answer, winner-takes-most. When the AI names one or two businesses, being named is worth more than ranking fifth ever was.
  • Nobody in your trade is doing it. Early ground is cheap ground; the corroboration the AI learns to trust compounds.
  • You currently can't see this channel at all. Your customers see these answers; you don't. Measurement alone has diagnostic value.
  • The work double-counts. What makes the AI name you largely helps Google rank you (AEO vs SEO).

Common questions

What are the benefits of AEO for a small business?

Early positioning in a channel where the AI gives one answer instead of ten links; visibility into a customer journey you currently cannot see at all; and the side benefit that most AEO work, machine-readable pages, structured data, freshness, citations, also strengthens your ordinary Google performance.

What are the drawbacks of AEO?

The channel's volumes are still small compared with Google search; results take weeks and authority takes months; engines change behaviour without notice; and the industry has more hype than proof, which makes it easy to buy badly. Anyone selling AEO without naming these is not being straight with you.

So is AEO worth it right now?

If customers research your category before buying, positioning early is cheap and compounds while competitors ignore it. The honest framing: pay for measured proof and early ground, not for promised bookings. If a seller promises volume today, walk away, including from us, because we won't.
